The importance of Selenium, a trace element, has only been recognised for around 50 years but is now considered the most important trace element in your diet.
Selenium (+ Vitamin E & C) are antioxidants which contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. It also contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and nails; Selenium is important for reproduction, thyroid gland function, DNA production, and protecting the body from damage caused by free radicals and from infection.
As a trace mineral we only need a small amount of Selenium to be effective. Unfortunately, in Europe there is a large amount of Selenium deficiency because the best dietary source of selenium is wheat, but some research has found that crops grown on European soil tend to be low in the mineral. Many whole grains and dairy products, including milk and yogurt, are good sources of selenium. Some ready-to-eat breakfast cereals are fortified with selenium, and some fruits and vegetables contain selenium. Pork, beef, turkey, chicken, fish, shellfish, and eggs contain high amounts of selenium (but this will not suit many people due to their dietary or lifestyle choices). As with anything, if the diet alone does not provide, you may wish to consider using a good quality supplement instead.
A single Brazil nut contains 68 to 91 micrograms (mcg) of selenium, meaning that just one nut per day can provide the daily recommended adult allowance of 55 mcg. In addition to selenium, Brazil nuts contain plenty of protein, essential minerals, and healthful fats.
The key to selenium supplementation is not taking too much. There are some high strength selenium supplements on the market but the most recent research shows that it is important not to take too much selenium either.
